Our Resident Treat Expert on Collagen Treats For Dogs
Carl Walker - Commercial Manager, and expert on all things treat-related at Rosewood Pet Products breaks down everything you need to know about collagen for dogs.
Here at Rosewood we’re constantly innovating to provide new products that benefit the health and happiness of your pets. That’s why this January, we’re launching our new Daily Eats Dog Chews for dogs.
There are more pet products on the market now than ever before, and ultimately this means there are lots of fads out there. It’s important to do your research before supplying your pets with new items and here, I break down everything you need to know about Collagen and show you the real benefits of feeding it to your dog.
What is collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our dog’s body. It accounts for about 1/3 of the total protein composition and its name actually derives from the Greek word ‘kólla’, which literally translates as ‘glue’.
Collagen is essentially the glue that holds everything in the body together, and is one of the major building blocks for bones, skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments too. It doesn’t stop there, Collagen also can be found throughout our dog’s bodies in the blood vessels, corneas and in their teeth.
Our pet should naturally be producing some collagen on their own by combining amino acids with nutrients from their protein rich foods (such as chicken, beans and beef). However, as dogs get older their bodies are no longer able to absorb nutrients as well as they once did - this is where Collagen Chews are the perfect supplement to regain what is lost.
Why is collagen great for our dogs?
You may have heard about the benefits of Collagen in the health and beauty industry for humans. It’s a rapidly growing market, proving to provide great health benefits for adults - so why stop there? Our pets too can benefit from this natural protein supplement, giving them the tools they need to stay strong, fit and healthy as they age. Collagen chews can also:
Support healthy joints and muscles
Promote hair growth, strong nails and a healthy coat
Aid digestion by breaking down proteins and soothing the lining of the gut
Helps to keep teeth clean whilst they chew
For our dogs, Collagen makes up 70-90% of their muscles, tendons and ligaments but their bodies cannot keep up with the demand and ultimately produce less and less as they age. One of our Collagen Dog Chews a day is a step in the right direction for helping to improve a dogs health as they get older.
Is collagen safe for dogs?
Yes! Collagen is a naturally occurring protein, derived in this instance from South American Grass Fed Cattle. We recommend a maximum of one treat per day, and make sure the treat is suitable for your dog’s age, size and breed. If you’re unsure, it’s always worth consulting a vet for further advice.
Should my dog be taking collagen?
Our Daily Eats Collagen Chews are suitable for dogs of all shapes and sizes from 4 months of age. In fact, we’ve created chews in 6 different sizes to suit all breeds. The Mini Rolls (5 pc) are ideal for smaller dogs like Chihuahuas, and on the other scale, the Retriever Roll (10 inch), as the name suggests, is perfect for breeds like Golden Retrievers.
